Group Therapy Offerings

Jewish Family Service of San Antonio offers group therapy sessions ranging in a variety of topics. While our staff is working diligently to create more offerings, see below for information about our anger management class.

Benefits of Group Therapy

Not sure if group therapy is right for you? Joining a group of strangers may sound intimidating at first, but group therapy provides benefits that individual therapy may not. According to the American Psychological Association, psychologists say, in fact, that group members are almost always surprised by how rewarding the group experience can be.

While the list of benefits is lengthy, here are a few reasons to try group therapy:

  1. Reduces stigma and isolation
  2. Allows you to practice working through problems with people who share the same issue.
  3. Encourages development of self-awareness
  4. Diversity. Different personalities and backgrounds are coming together to share ideas and situations.
  5. Provides a support network and sounding board

Social Skills for Adults

CLASS FORMING NOW!

This group is designed for adults with high social anxiety and those struggling with navigating the social nuances of the world*. Individuals with social anxiety, high-functioning ASD, ADHD, and other diagnoses inhibiting human interactions might find this group particularly helpful while working through social connectivity issues. Some topics include:

  • How do I know what is socially expected when the rules are not explicit?
  • How do I create, navigate, and maintain friendships?
  • How do I “unstick” ideas, thoughts, and habits that prevent me from forming and maintaining friendships, jobs or communicating clearly?

This group will meet once a week for a 12-week period. All participants will be asked to commit to all 12 weeks. During that time no new members will be added to the group. At the end of the 12-week group, members may choose to move on from the group or re-commit to another 12 weeks.  New members will only be added from the vacated spots. If you call and go through the intake process during the 12 week group, you will be added to our group wait list and periodically updated as to your status in the next group cycle.

*Class curriculum is guided by The Social Thinking® Methodology created by Michelle Garcia Winner. For more information about these materials, visit www.socialthinking.com.
